As we embark on the journey through June, a month dedicated to celebrating our youth, we also pause to reflect on the evolving narratives surrounding womanhood. June holds significance in South Africa as the month of Youth. Annually, on the 9th of June, we commemorate National No Apologies Period Day, a poignant occasion. Throughout history, individuals who experience menstruation have been burdened with unwarranted shame and guilt merely for their natural bodily processes. From a tender age, society conditions us to regard menstruation as a taboo subject, unfit for public discourse—a notion that defies logic, given that half of the world's population undergoes this biological phenomenon. This significant day endeavours to dismantle the deeply ingrained culture of shame surrounding menstruation. Moreover, it highlights the importance of accessible adolescent contraceptives, empowering individuals to manage their reproductive health confidently. Periods are not only a natural facet of human health but also a fundamental part of life. It is high time we relinquish archaic patriarchal attitudes and dispense with all apologies. Period. The PFFSA envisions a South Africa where every woman has access to comprehensive healthcare, empowering her to make informed decisions about her well-being. Let us embrace this month with a spirit of self-empowerment and resilience, encouraging our youth to reject societal norms that seek to confine and define us. Together, let's embark on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, embracing the diversity of women's experiences. We're excited to share with you the enriching opportunities lined up this week!
